A normal brush only ever touches the coat you can see.

Double-coated breeds — Huskies, Retrievers, German Shepherds, Corgis, Aussies, and plenty of cats — have a soft dense undercoat beneath the guard hairs. That’s the layer that sheds in clumps, and that’s the layer a slicker brush never reaches. You brush, the dog looks tidy, and there’s still hair on everything you own.

A rake’s long widely spaced teeth pass through the topcoat and pull out the dead undercoat instead. The volume that comes out the first time is genuinely startling.

One thing you should never do with a double coat

Don’t shave it in summer.

The undercoat insulates both directions — it keeps heat out as well as in — and the guard hairs protect against sunburn. Shaving a double coat often makes a dog hotter, not cooler, and the coat may grow back patchy or never return to its original texture. Raking out the dead undercoat is the correct summer answer. That’s what this tool is for.

Is this the right tool?

✓  YES, IF
  • Husky, Retriever, Shepherd, Corgi, Aussie
  • Long-haired cat with a dense undercoat
  • Seasonal moult filling your house with hair
  • Early tangles you want out before they mat
✕  NO, IF
  • Single-coated breed — Poodle, Greyhound, Boxer — there’s no undercoat to remove and a rake will only irritate the skin
  • Your pet is severely matted — that needs a groomer, not a rake
  • Wire-coated breeds needing hand-stripping
  • You want a soft finishing brush

Questions people actually ask

How do I know if my dog is double-coated?

Part the coat with your fingers. If there’s a soft woolly layer beneath the longer outer hairs, it’s double-coated. If it’s one uniform texture down to the skin, it isn’t — and a rake is the wrong tool.

Will it hurt my dog?

Not with light pressure and short strokes in the direction of coat growth. Never drag it through a solid mat — that pulls on the skin. Cut mats out or see a groomer.

Should I shave my Husky in summer instead?

No. The undercoat insulates against heat as well as cold and the guard hairs prevent sunburn. Shaving often makes a double-coated dog hotter and the coat can grow back permanently altered. Rake the dead undercoat out instead.

How often during a moult?

Every day or two for the couple of weeks a coat blow lasts, ideally outdoors.
